About Topaz
Topaz is an aluminium silicate containing fluorine and hydroxyl. It occurs colourless, blue, yellow, brown, pink and in the prized reddish-orange imperial variety. At Mohs 8 it is hard, though it has perfect basal cleavage that cutters must respect. You can read more via gemmological reference, mineral data.
Topaz crystallises in granitic pegmatites and rhyolite cavities from fluorine-rich vapours late in the cooling of igneous rock. Well-formed prismatic crystals are characteristic.
Why You Will Love This Parcel
💎 Raw Material Potential
These uncut pieces offer lapidary artists the chance to experiment with different cabochon shapes or wire wrap freeform designs straight from the natural form.
✨ Bench Durability
With a high hardness rating on the Mohs scale, this material holds up well against scratching and takes a fine polish when you work through the grits.
🔷 Colour Consistency
The uniform sky blue shade runs evenly through the material, helping you plan your orientations to maximise colour saturation in your finished pieces.

Popular Uses
Topaz is widely used in rings, pendants and earrings. Its hardness supports daily wear, while its cleavage means it should be protected from hard direct impact. Rough of this kind is bought by cutters, wire wrappers and collectors rather than set as it is.
Ideal For
- Lapidary hobbyists stocking the workbench

Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly do I receive in this parcel?
You receive the whole lot pictured: 88.74 grams of natural Sky Blue Topaz rough, with individual stones between 13.8 to 22 grams. The parcel is not split and the stones are not sold separately.
How should I orient these pieces for cutting?
Examine each piece under magnification to locate internal flaws and natural growth lines. Plan your cuts to avoid the perfect basal cleavage plane, which can cause the material to split unexpectedly during the sawing process.
Is this material suitable for daily wear jewellery?
Yes, once shaped and set securely, this mineral is hard enough to resist everyday scratching from dust and regular use. However, you should still protect the finished work from hard knocks against abrasive surfaces.
Can I wire wrap these rough pieces directly?
These stones make excellent candidates for wire wrapping projects due to their attractive natural shapes and clean surfaces. Choose a sturdy gauge of wire to hold the irregular forms securely in your pendant designs.
How does topaz compare to softer quartz materials on the lapidary wheel?
This mineral sits higher on the hardness scale than standard quartz, meaning it requires slightly more time on the grinding laps. Use diamond tooling and maintain adequate water flow to achieve a smooth pre-polish.
How long does delivery take, and can I return it?
We contact you directly as soon as your order is placed to arrange delivery, so you always know where the parcel is. Returns are accepted within 7 days of the date you receive the item.
Are your stones natural, or are any of them synthetic?
Everything we sell is 100% natural. We do not deal in synthetic or laboratory-grown material, and we do not hide anything about a piece: the photographs are shot to show every detail, including the ones a seller might prefer you did not see.
Are the stones in the photographs the ones I will be sent?
Yes. Every parcel is weighed and photographed as a group before it is listed, and once it sells the listing comes down.
