About Ruby
Ruby is the red gem variety of corundum, coloured by chromium replacing a small fraction of the aluminium in its structure. The same chromium that produces the red also causes fluorescence, which can make fine ruby appear to glow in sunlight. Stones too light in tone are classed as pink sapphire. You can read more via gemmological reference, mineral data.
Ruby forms in marbles produced where limestone is metamorphosed, and in basalt-hosted deposits. The chromium needed for red is rarely found alongside aluminium in nature, which is a large part of why fine ruby is scarcer than most other coloured gems.
Why You Will Love This Specimen
๐ Crystal Habit
The specimen exhibits the well defined hexagonal barrel forms and natural growth lines characteristic of primary corundum development.
โจ Cabinet Display
Position this piece on a neutral mineral mount inside your display case to highlight its natural contour and vivid coloration.
๐ท Species Durability
Standing near the top of the Mohs scale, the robust nature of this mineral ensures the crystal faces remain crisp and well preserved over time.
๐ฆ Exactly What Is Pictured
The photographs and video show this specimen. You receive the specimen pictured, not a lookalike.
Popular Uses
Ruby has been prized for millennia and remains among the most sought-after coloured stones. Its hardness of 9 makes it practical for rings worn daily, and it is the traditional July birthstone and a classic anniversary gift. Frequently Asked Questions
How big is this specimen?
It measures 34 x 29 x 24 mm and weighs 32.8 grams. Those figures were taken from this piece, so use them rather than judging scale from the photographs.
How should I display this raw crystal?
Place it in a well lit display cabinet using a clear acrylic mount designed for mineral specimens. Angled lighting helps reveal the natural crystal faces and surface textures without needing to handle the piece frequently.
Is this mineral durable enough for handling?
Corundum is exceptionally hard, meaning the crystal edges and natural faces are robust and resist scratching from everyday dust and routine placement in a collection.
What causes the pink colour in this specimen?
The coloration stems from trace amounts of chromium substituting within the aluminium oxide crystal lattice during the mineral's growth deep within the earth.
How does this compare to other mineral specimens?
Unlike polished stones, this piece retains its geological context completely intact. It offers the structural integrity and aesthetic of a primary mineral formation straight from the source rock.
How long does delivery take, and can I return it?
We contact you directly as soon as your order is placed to arrange delivery, so you always know where the parcel is. Returns are accepted within 7 days of the date you receive the item.
Are your stones natural, or are any of them synthetic?
Everything we sell is 100% natural. We do not deal in synthetic or laboratory-grown material, and we do not hide anything about a piece: the photographs are shot to show every detail, including the ones a seller might prefer you did not see.
Will I receive the specimen in the photographs?
Yes. Each specimen is listed on its own and the photographs were shot from this exact piece. Once it sells the listing comes down.
